Jean Leising grew up in Lawrenceville, IN living with her family above the Schoettelkotte Bros. General Store. Jean worked in the family business from a very early age. She graduated from Sunman High School as Salutatorian in 1966, and with honors from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1969. She married David Leising in 1969 and moved to his family farm near Oldenburg in Franklin Co. They had 4 children: Jill, Jennifer, Jeffrey, and the late David Jr., who died shortly after his birth in 1981. When Dave was killed in a farm accident in 1980, Jean continued the farming operation and was named IN Farm Bureau Woman of the Year and served as the President of the IN Corn Growers Assn. Jean served as your State Senator from 1988 to 1996 where she was recognized by several groups, including the NFIB, IN Home Care Assn., the Optometric Society, the NRA, and the Right to Life. Jean retired from the Senate in 1996 to run for Congress in the 9th Congressional District. Jean married Frank Thompson in 1995 and continues to reside on the family farm. Jean is a proud grandmother of Emily Koch - 7, Kate Whaley - 6, and Grace Whaley - 3.
